Anne is a feminist in a pre-feminist period. She’s a strong, independent character, someone who can cope. I wanted to play her as soon as I saw the word `haggard’ describing her. `Haggard’ - I can play haggard. I know what I look like first thing in the morning. I relish a job like this, starting off downtrodden and gradually blossoming.
